Bond Beyond Borders (A short story)
Rajesh was a Phd student in an American University. In his search for a partner to share accomodation he found a true friend and like minded person in Raja a student at the same university who had come from Pakistan. Raja was a vegetarian and humble like Rajesh and they hit it off very well together. Raja's sister Sania and a cousin Rana were coming to US on a holiday. They had planned a week at their location. Rajesh and Raja were staying in a modest 2 bedroom apartment with a living room and kitchen. Rajesh offered to manage in the living room during Sania's stay. Rana could be with Raja in his room. The day arrived when the visitors had to arrive. Rajesh was told to pickup Sania and Rana from airport. Raja had planned and elaborate schedule for Sania. It was a very busy time for Raja so he had enlisted his friends from Pakistan to take Sania and Rana around. Separate set of friends for Sania and separate for Rana. Within an hour of landing at their residence both Sania and Rana were picked up by separate people to take around and entertain. Each day this continued a separate person for Sania and separate for Rana. There used to be heated discussions between Sania and Raja in the evenings. This continued from Monday to Friday. On Friday Rajesh found Sania had nobody to take around and offered to take around. Sania was very reluctant but finally agreed when Rajesh explained a detailed plan. Rajesh took Sania around to some nice spots explained in detail. Sania seemed anxious during the journey. Rajesh could not help asking "Are you ok, you seem anxious?". Sania replied "Every man I went out with tried to molest me I resisted each attempt I am anxious as to when you would try something like that". Rajesh was shocked. "Oh I have no such intentions I genuinely wanted to take you around, Raja has been such a good friend to me". Sania felt comfortable and opened up "My father wants me to come to US, one of the ways was to marry someone here, these men thought that I am looking out for marriage and took their chances". "Raja is very annoyed with me for rejecting their advances". She continued "I topped my university in Pakistan and am seeking admission to an American University", considering our financial position my father could only send Raja here". Rajesh said "I offer my un conditional support to you to fulfill your dream". "if you agree then I request that this be kept confidential, at any point you are not confident or un happy with any of my actions verbal or written please let me know I will apologise, I will consider your case as one of my targets and work towards a logical conclusion. You can drop me if you are not satisfied at any time and I promise that I will not pursue you ". Take your time to decide if you want to accept my support. To get to your final destination it may take time but my support will be genuine and unconditional". Sania saw a ray of hope and just before she left back for home she informed Rajesh that she accepts his support. After Sania reached home they started a conversation. The possibilities were discussed. Sania had to appear for several exams and then began an application process. Rajesh secretly funded this cost. Finally Sania got admission to an American university for a course she desired. When Sania informed her father he was delighted. Sania could arrange for her ticket. Her dream came true as she joined a program in a US university. As Rajesh and Sania grew closer he realised that secretly although they were Muslim before the partition of India into Pakistan they were Hindu. In order to be part of the mainstream in Pakistan her grandfather decided to convert to Islam but secretly retain his Hindu traditions at home. This explained her being a vegetarian. Her father also followed Christianity. Slowly they saw each other as life partners culminating in their marriage.
