In the state of Maharashtra in Western India whenever a person attains a high status in society he/she suffixes their last name with Patil. So Vikhe would become Vikhe-Patil and so on. In North India I found Choudhari or Rao as titles prefixing first name for prominent individuals. I wonder what would happen to a name if a person was born with Patil as last name in Maharashtra and as Rao or Choudhari in North India.
