I had read this in a newspaper many years ago:
Two farmers reached VT (now CST) station by the last train. when the train ticket checker (TT) asked them for tickets, they both started looking at each other. When asked to pay the fine for not having tickets, again they started looking at each other. The TT then told them that the only alternative was to take them to a lock up, to which they agreed. Next morning to the surprise of the TT the two farmers produced the train tickets. Surprised the TT asked "Why did you not produce these when I asked for them yesterday?" to this one of them replied "We were carrying cash to buy a tractor and thought there was no safer place than a railway lockup to spend the night!".
